Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism is fraud. It means taking credit for doing or saying something which was said or done before by someone else. As with the expression of original ideas or inventions, copyright laws protect these intellectual properties (Brown, V., Jordan, R., Rubin, N., & Arome, G., 2010). According to Palloff and Pratt (n.d.), plagiarism is no more common in online learning environments than it is in face-to-face learning environment.

One of the ways to detect plagiarism is the use of software such as Turnitin. However there are opposing groups to the use of such software (Brown, V., Jordan, R., Rubin, N., & Arome, G., 2010). Instead, changing the way we engage learners in more authentic experiences may contribute to decreasing cheating in the first place.

Ways to decrease plagiarism are various:

• Assignments which would encourage each learner to contribute from their life experiences.
• Increase usage of internet tools: wikis, blogs, email, etc (Brown, V., Jordan, R., Rubin, N., & Arome, G., 2010).
• Model contributions to online discussions or through internet tools and provide plenty of practice on how to use the information found on resources – paraphrasing, quoting, referencing.
• Implement peer evaluation as a way to gather not only individual information but in sharing with others what has been learned within the community of learners (As found in Effective Peer Critique video) .
• Presenting specific expectations to learners in reference to what consequences they would face in case plagiarism is detected.
• Lastly, increasing learner’s confidence in their writing skills might reduce plagiarism since this might be unintentional (Elander, J., Pittam, G., Lusher, J., Fox, P., & Payne, N., 2010).

Magda, I agree that plagiarism is an act of fraud. It is an act of cheating. We find that it is wrong to cheat. I understand that plagiarism, whether done deliberately or accidentally, is a form of cheating. In school, when you copy somebody work you cheat. When you plagiarize you also copy somebody else ideas or theories without acknowledging the source so that is a form of cheating also. Even when you paraphrase someone ideas, you must document your source. Therefore, it is indicated that plagiarism is wrong. According to Snow (n.d.) plagiarism is wrong because:
*It is unethical
* It is illegal
* It is against all academic codes of conduct
* It robs the plagiarizer of important skills

As Walker (2010) points out “student plagiarism in colleges and universities has become a controversial issue I recent years” (p. 41). We can see that this is an issue among colleges and universities. Their goal is to find ways to prevent it. As you indicated in your post Turnitin is a great way to prevent plagiarism.

Hi Magda,
I think your idea of each learner contributing from their life experience is truly a strong point. In keeping to the personal aspect becomes very hard to use someone else’s ideas. This coupled with increasing learner’s confidence in their writing skills and I would their ability to increase their own knowledge about a topic might reduce plagiarism, since it may be unintentional. I believe that many online learners today think they don’t have the time to do the research and reading required to attain the information required. Therefore, as stated in our resource video, cut and paste is just a way of reducing their work load.
